Seinfeld Trivia

Seinfeld Trivia: Very Few Know This One!

"Seinfeld" was such a great show, and Seinfeld trivia is a passion of mine. The "show about nothing" was, in fact, really something, particularly in the way the writers cleverly weaved together multiple story-lines in each show in unexpected ways. At the end of each show, some common thread of the story-lines is revealed, neatly tying the episode up into one neat, perfectly wrapped and very funny package. And the genius of the show is that you never see the "wrap-up" coming!

Take the "Marine Biologist" episode for example. Kramer hits dozens of golf balls into the ocean to work on his game, while at the same time George has to pretend to be a marine biologist while dating "the it girl" from his college days. When George recalls at the coffee shop his adventure of actually having to rescue a whale to keep up the marine biologist facade, he pulls a golf ball out of his pocket that was blocking the whale's blow-hole. The look on Kramer's face when he sees the golf ball is priceless, and when I first heard his response of "Is that a Titleist? - a whole-in-one, huh?", I laughed so hard my face hurt! Never saw it coming!!

But here's some Seinfeld trivia that most rabid fans don't know

Speaking of wrap-ups, did you notice the way the writers cleverly wrapped up the entire series by having it come full circle? Not many people know this tidbit of Seinfeld trivia, even die-hard fans of the show, but the very first "bit" of the very first show and the very last "bit" of the very last show are, for all intents and purposes, THE SAME BIT! And the characters actually hint at this connection too, but of course it's done so subtly that almost nobody ever realized it!

In the pilot episode, known as "The Seinfeld Chronicles", after Jerry's opening comedy show monologue, the first real dialogue is between Jerry and George in the coffee shop, concerning the placement of the second button on George's shirt:

Jerry: Seems to me, that button is in the worst possible spot. The second button literally makes or breaks the shirt, look at it; it's too high! It's in no-mans-land, you look like you live with you're mother.
In the final episode, number 180, know as "The Finale (part 2)", prior to the show's epilogue, Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer are sitting in a jail cell, about to be sent to prison for breaking the "Good Samaritan" law. In the last real dialogue of the show before the camera pans back, Jerry and George are at it again:

Jerry: See now, to me, that button is in the worst possible spot.

George: Really?

Jerry: Oh yeah. The second button is the key button. It literally makes or breaks the shirt. Look at it, it's too high, it's in no-mans-land.

George: Haven't we had this conversation before?

Jerry: You think?

George: I think we have.

Jerry: Yeah, maybe we have.

What a great way to end the show! Of course, it's just too bad that the show had to end at all. Luckily, there's always reruns and the Seinfeld DVDs to fall back on. Let's face it, the shows are still hilarious, even though we've seen them a million times and we actually know what's coming!

Stealth Seinfeld trivia: The last word uttered in the last episode, during the epilogue (from prison) is from Jerry (who else), and that word is "cafeteria".

One last word on the Seinfeld DVDs: Seasons 1 through 8 of Seinfeld are already on sale, but my favorite "guest star" source of Seinfeld trivia only makes two appearances in that time, both in season 6. I'm talking about none other than David Puddy. Yeah, that's right. Puddy. I can't wait until the final 9th season Seinfeld DVD comes out next year, because that features 9, that's right, 9 Puddy episodes. LET'S GET IT ON!
